Strange New Worlds started as a promising series. The problem is that every episode of Season 4 was either a gimmick or a parody of something. This includes an episode in which all the characters were portrayed as puppets.
If I am being honest, Season 4 was mostly entertaining, but the series lost the thread of what Star Trek should be about. They chose to lean toward comedy, but the show is called Strange New Worlds, and that is not what they gave us. When an entire season is full of gimmicks, the series has lost its way.
What makes Star Trek great is the sense that we are exploring the future and encountering things we have never seen before. At the start of the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie, it opened with a few classic Star Trek beeps, along with a view that flipped orientation. The sounds and visuals gave the impression that we were on a spaceship and something outer space was about to happen, which it did.
Some people think that Star Trek is about issues, diplomacy, or problem-solving, but the core of this classic sci-fi space franchise should be about exploration and a sense of wonder.
