So this clip got me to watch the episode. Despite the 7.2 score on IMDB, my impression is slightly negative. Kirk behaved irrationally because of a personal obsession. He had other priorities that he ignored. If the creature is such a threat then Kirk should have taken the matter to his superiors.
The episode takes place mostly on the ship, with only one small set for the planet. Maybe the show was saving money, but this turned the episode into a soap opera.
The idea of delivering vaccines is an overused trope in Star Trek.
