Star Trek Deep Space 9 was more serial than previous Star Trek shows, and it developed a really good long term story arc, but it took a long time to get that story going. We aren't introduced to the long story till the end of season 2, and it only came up occasionally in the next couple of seasons.
DS9 felt like a good show, but Star Trek The Next Generation can be more satisfying in its standalone episodes.
