Neil Patrick Harris: New Doctor Who Will Feature 'First Gay Doctor'

The British TV series Doctor Who ran from 1963 to 1987.  The series was created to teach children about history but became a very popular and somewhat serious science fiction show.

None of these old shows I really liked, but the series was rebooted in 2004 and became really good in seasons 3 and 4, and very epic in seasons 5 and 6. I would recommend anyone watching the show, say on the HBO+ streaming service, start with season 3. The first season is a little silly and the show didn't hit its stride until season 3.

I'm rewatching the series for the nth time. I've lost count. It is that good.

After season 6 the show went on a slow decline. It hit rock bottom with Jodie Whitaker playing the first female Doctor Who, not because there is anything wrong with Jodie Whitaker, but because the quality of the show was so mediocre.

Last weekend's special, "The Power of the Doctor", was good enough to redeem the series somewhat. Jodie Whitaker is now out, and David Tennant is temporarily returning as the Doctor in November of next year in the 60th-anniversary special.  This is an apparent desperate attempt to revive the dying franchise.

Sometime after that, we are getting a black, gay actor playing a black gay Doctor Who. This seems unfortunate because this character has never been gay. Back in 1963, he was traveling with his granddaughter, and in 2004 he fell in love with Rose Tyler. There are some not-so-subtle hints that he has slept with a few famous women throughout history, such as Queen Elizabeth the first.

Both Star Trek and Star Wars now have gay characters and it is no big deal.  Doctor Who has had gay characters for a long time.  It makes less sense to take a traditionally non-gay character and turn them into a gay character.
